In 2015, we joined forces with Architecture 00. Together, we enjoy collaborating in a shared environment where strategic, urban and social designers, architects, programmers and economists practice design beyond its traditional borders. 00 work with individuals, governments, corporations and communities to solve problems and anticipate change, and to design successful platforms and places. As a studio it aims to reach beyond the design of objects themselves to the social, economic and environmental systems behind them.
In addition to the Colour in Hackney commission, Studio Weave have been appointed to produce a design code with the aim of reducing, rationalising and redesigning Hackney’s housing estate signage. The Signage in Hackney framework is designed to work in tandem with the colour logic established in Colour in Hackney .
The Signage Design Code establishes a more consistent, coordinated and design-focused approach to Hackney’s signage. It is divided into 3 main categories: Identifying (consisting of building names and numbers,) Background (legislative, informative and preventative signs), Wayfinding (directional signs) and Collective (noticeboards etc) signage. The code proposes the strategy for the retaining of historic and special character signs as well as introducing a graphic and material design for new signs created by our collaborators, Polimekanos. The code also stresses the importance of consulting and engaging local residents in the project, with a recognition that the long –term success of the initiative would depend on the buy-in and participation of the community.
