Studio Weave were commissioned to collaborate with fabricator Zébra3 to deliver “Refuges Periurbains” – a timber hiking shelter in the landscape of the Bordeaux periphery. The project, initiated by the arts and architecture collective Bruit du Frigo, establishes a pedestrian route connected by a series of seven shelters.

Our scheme sits in a quiet clearing, adjacent to a derelict watermill on one of many natural streams that run through the wooded landscape. The rotational geometry and springing vaults complement the silhouette of the surrounding mature trees. Composed of timber and sheet copper, the shelter references the materiality of the traditional water tower.
